All About Antioxidants
Antioxidants can really work wonders for your complexion. Think of them as a protective armor against the stressors our skin encounters daily – pollution and UV rays, etc. They neutralize harmful molecules called free radicals that wreak havoc on the skin cells, leading to dullness, premature aging, and a loss of elasticity; they really are a must have in your routine. Antioxidants are naturally found in various vitamins, minerals, and botanical extracts. Vitamin C, vitamin E, niacinamide, and green tea extract are a few examples of antioxidant-rich ingredients you might encounter in your skincare products. I even focus on ensuring I have an antioxidant-rich diet- my faves are blueberries, blackberries, black beans, dark leafy greens, gala apples and cinnamon. Also green tea, but I need to be more intentional about drinking this over coffee.
The Benefits of Incorporating Antioxidants
1. Fight Premature Aging:
By neutralizing free radicals, antioxidants help prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin – the building blocks of youthful skin. This translates to fewer fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging over time. Antioxidants are really where it’s at.
2. Brighten Dull Skin:
Antioxidants can help brighten your complexion by reducing the appearance of sunspots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. Your skin will look more radiant and refreshed as a result.
3. Soothe Inflammation:
For those prone to redness or sensitivity, antioxidants can be super helpful. They possess anti-inflammatory properties that help calm irritated skin, making it feel more comfortable.
4. Enhance Sun Protection:
While not a substitute for sunscreen, antioxidants can work alongside it to provide an additional layer of defense against the harmful effects of UV rays. For this reason, I recommend layering with Vit C, then sunscreen.
5. Support Skin Repair:
Some antioxidants, like vitamin E, aid in skin repair by promoting healing and reducing the appearance of scars and blemishes. For years now I have recommended that my patients massage their incisions with Vitamin E oil during the healing process.
Antioxidant Products I love:
Firming and Illuminating Complex
This serum yields a 100/100 Yuka score for my ladies looking to use the most pure, clean ingredients. Use this AM and PM for a more luminous complexion.
This supercharged 10% Vitamin C serum (contains three different types of Vitamin C) is boosted with Vitamin E and Feurulic Acid (thus the E and F)- THE ultimate antioxidant combo. And side note, I’m continually amazed at Theramid’s pricing- it’s quite affordable.
I’m in the middle of a testing protocol with Allies of Skin. I have been using this product diligently, AM and PM for the past 3 weeks. It contains an amazing blend of antioxidants including Vitamin C, Bakuchiol, Vitamin E plus 11 nutrient rich oils. It’s recommended for all skin types- especially dull, tired and dehydrated skin. My skin is LOVING it but I can’t say that I have quite noticed a “difference”. (Though I didn’t have any major problem areas.) I am taking regular progress photos for Allies of Skin- I plan to compare those when my testing phase is over to see if there is some noticeable improvement.
Whether you’re looking to prevent premature aging, brighten your complexion, or simply ensure you’re adequately protecting your skin, you’ll be covered with antioxidants. Trust in their ability to rejuvenate your skin and help you achieve a beautiful, luminous glow.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this blog post and also if you have tried any of these products!
