Retinol is an over-the-counter type of retinoid, a skincare ingredient that converts to retinoic acid- an active form of Vitamin A- to the skin. Retin-A (tretinoin) is the prescription strength version- it is stronger and works faster than Retinol. Accutane is another prescription form. Think of retinoids as the umbrella to anti-aging/ “well aging”. It has been shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve tone and texture by increasing cell turnover and stimulating collagen production. It also helps to prevent acne. Second to SPF, a retinoid (for our purposes here, I’m focusing on OTC forms- retinol/retinal) is a must in your skincare regimen and really considered the “gold standard”.

You’ll want to think: “start low and go slow” with retinol products. Limit initial use to twice per week, gradually increasing frequency to three times per week, then every other night, and then to each evening as tolerated. Apply only a pea-sized portion to your face after cleansing and ensuring it is completely dry. I apply a second pea sized portion to my neck as well. When starting, I would avoid the lip and eye area and in fact, I recommend applying aquaphor to these areas to protect them.

The typical retinol reaction involve redness, flaking, tightness and drying of the skin. I have experienced all of these. Some people may experience a delayed sensitized reaction. Definitely pay close attention to how your skin responds, and adjust usage accordingly. Again-“start low (low percentage) and go slow”.

Lastly, be sure to protect your skin daily with SPF 30 or greater. I prefer 40 +. Ok, on to my recommendations.

Firming Moisturizer 0.2% Retinol + Tsubaki Oil by Typology

This is a wonderful way to ease into using a retinol product. The Tsubaki (plant based) oil makes it hydrating and gentle. I would certainly recommend this to any retinol newbie.

Drunk Elephant A Gloie- Retinol Oil

This is a vegan 0.5% retinol oil. What’s nice is that this oil contains Ceramides and Marula Oil. Apply two to three drops to the face. You can also combine this with your moisturizer.

Drunk Elephant A Passioni Retinol Cream

This vegan retinol is paired with superfood rich ingredients. Good for all skin types. This is a 1% retinol product.

Paula’s Choice 1% Retinol

The ratings are impressive on this product. Definitely recommend this for once you are already acclimated to using retinol.

This is a great starting point for dipping your toes into using an OTC retinoid. I welcome you to reach out via Instagram DM or email if you have questions about these products.
