Everything You Need To Know About Figuring Out Your Skin Type

I frequently get asked, “how do I get started with a skincare routine?” There are so many great products out there, suitable for all skin types and concerns. In order to be able to begin building an effective skincare routine that truly works for you, you’ll need to first determine your skin type. I’m walking you through how to figure this out below.

Normal Skin

Properly balanced skin. This is the easiest type to care for.

How to Tell if You Have Normal Skin

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry and wait 30 minutes. If your skin feels hydrated and normal (not at all oily), you have normal skin.

Oily Skin

This is caused by an overproduction of sebum. This skin type is always shiny, and is most prone to blackheads, whiteheads, enlarged pores and acne blemishes. The positive is that oily skin is less prone to wrinkles.

You may find that makeup does not stay put like you want it to. You’re constantly reaching for mattifying makeup or powder. How to know for sure? Midday or evening, take a clean blotting sheet and blot your face, then hold it up to the light to see how much oil was absorbed. If there is an abundance of oil, there you have it- you have oily skin.

Dry Skin

The opposite of oily skin- this is skin that doesn’t have enough oil. It can appear dry, rough skaly or flaky. It can feel tight. Unfortunately those (like me) who have dry skin can have more noticeable fine lines.

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry and wait 30 minutes. If your skin feels tight and maybe even flaky, you have dry skin.

Combination Skin

If you’re feeling stuck on which type you are, you may have combination skin. This is characterized by an oily T- zone with the rest of the face being dry or normal.

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry and wait 30 minutes. If your cheeks feel balanced or dry but you have a shiny T zone only, you have combination skin. (combination normal or combination dry)

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is prone to inflammation and redness. Think of it as reactive skin, easily triggered by everything from fragrances to environmental factors.

How to Tell if You Have Sensitive Skin

There are a few telltale signs: most skincare products sting or burn- you actually have a difficult time finding something that feels comfortable against your skin. Also, you’re prone to redness or rashes, and you flush easily.

Ok, so now you have determined your skin type but you may feel intimidated by the prospect of filtering through the plethora of products out there, and there are various products and even new lines coming out as you read this. So where to begin? It’s daunting, I know- and that’s where I can help. I’ve created a free 10 page skincare guide. This is the guide I wish I had 15 years ago! I walk you through creating an AM and PM routine and provide links to specific products. Download your guide here. I’d absolutely love to hear your experience with the guide. I’m using the feedback I receive to improve my process and create useful content for you, my community.
