I’m someone who has had chronically sensitive eyes. I would get my makeup done for an event and would be happy with the look and then once the mascara went on, the look was ruined by red, irritated, itchy eyes- terrible. So off I went to hunt for a mascara I could tolerate. Here you’ll find the best clean mascaras on the market that are safe and won’t irritate or clump up. Learn about different brands and their ingredients, plus tips on how to choose the perfect product for your needs. Here are 5 phenomenal clean mascaras, all under $30.
llia Limitless Lash Mascara

This mascara by Ila has a buildable formula. The dual sided brush is awesome! It’s not waterproof but it is water resistant. Gluten free. This is definitely our most used mascara.
Saie Mascara 101

Made from Beeswax and Shea Butter, this mascara from Saie is touted for its lengthening effects.
ATHR Beauty The Big Bang Mascara

This mascara is highly pigmented and has staying power. Made with Castor Oil and Jasmine Plant Extract. Gluten free.
Honest Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer
This has a cult following. At only $17.99 (currently $15) you can order it in multiples. It is double sided- 1 side is the mascara and the other primer. Made with Jojoba Esters. It’s also gluten free.

Merit Clean Last Extending Mascara
I’ve been wanting to try this product. It’s a tubing mascara that is supposed to be amazing at separating, lifting and defining lashes but for a natural look. “No makeup” makeup- my favorite.

1/28/23 update: My SIL surprised me with this mascara at Christmas! I love it! It is definitely natural but I feel that it provides a bit more impact than the Ilia mascara because of the way it coats the lashes. Fantastic buy, and I highly recommend it if you haven’t tried it already.
And there you have it- my clean mascara recommendations.
Have you tried any of these? Let me know in the comments.
