I’ve taken a deep dive into Korean beauty and I’m incredibly impressed.

Originally landing here as a niche trend, K beauty has now absolutely dominated the skincare industry. It’s driven by a philosophy that combines dermatological science and wellness from within. They do much better than we do here in the US- they focus on prevention rather than tackling problems as they occur. The “glass skin” we’re all looking for requires dedication- 10, even up to 12 steps!
A standard 10 step Korean skin care routine goes like this:
- Double Cleanse -> oil based cleanser and then foaming cleanser or bar
- Exfoliation -> physical or chemical
- Toner -> skin prep containing antioxidants or other beneficial additives
- Essence * -> typically contain an active ingredient; adds a layer of hydration
- Serums * -> a bit thicker than an essence, address specific issues light dark spots, etc.
- Ampoules * – > supercharged serums that contain concentrated versions of actives
- Sheet Masks
- Eye Cream
- Moisturizer
- SPF
*#4 through #6 are considered by Koreans to be the most essential steps in the skincare regimen.
What I’m loving is the idea of “skip-care”. It’s a pared down, consolidated routine focused on using what you need and eliminating what you don’t. Multi-tasking products are the focus.
Let’s get into specific ingredients. The K beauty world is known for their use of highly potent, gentle plant-based ingredients. Below I have delved into the most popular ingredients + products containing that specific ingredient. (click on each product to view more info/ shop)
Snail Mucin– a hydrating powerhouse. It relieves irritation and promotes cell turnover. Try this COSRX Repairing Essence (over 20,000 AMAZING reviews) and their Repair Cream I can attest- if you’re looking for serious glow, this essence is where it’s at! I haven’t tried the repair cream just yet.
Hyaluronic Acid– known to help strengthen the skin barrier, hyaluronic acid draws in and retains water to keep the skin hydrated for longer. It’s like a nice drink of water for your skin : ) Try this Dermalogy Probiotic Youth Repair Cream by NEOGEN and, this Calming Moisture Barrier Cream and this amazing sheet mask from MASQUE BAR
Rice Water– provides brightening and anti-inflammatory benefits. Try NEOGEN’s Dermalogy Real Ferment Micro Essence
Licorice Root -corrects hyperpigmentation and slows signs of premature aging by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme that controls melanin production. Try this Creamy Jelly Cleanser by BYOMA and this sheet mask which contains Licorice Root + Vitamin C.
Ginseng Extract -works double time by stimulating collagen synthesis while the antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals- these are responsible for fine lines and wrinkles. Try this Ginseng Cleansing Oil by Beauty of Joseon and SUR.MEDIC+ bright Gluthathione Mask
Green Tea– protects from UV rays, soothes inflammation and reduces sebum production (think less breakouts!) Try this Intensive Hydrating Cream by innisfree and these Bio-Peel+ Gauze Peeling Pads by NEOGEN
Did you know the amazing Laneige is a K Beauty brand? I didn’t!
I just ordered the Thank You Farmer SPF 50 Water Sun Cream. I’ll provide an update once I have adequately tried it. I’m interested to see how this compares to my ride-or-die eltaMD clear sunscreen. 1/2/23 update: I have been using this sunscreen for the past three months and am *incredibly impressed. See IG post about this product . It is very hydrating and wears well under makeup.
